Basketball Court FAQ

Clear answers to common questions about basketball court flooring, hoops, layouts, installation, and pricing.

Court Flooring FAQs

What is the best flooring for an outdoor basketball court?+

Good outdoor flooring has to cope with sun, rain, and big temperature swings without turning slippery or brittle. That usually means a purpose-built outdoor system such as modular basketball court tiles or a professionally coated surface. Which one suits you comes down to how the court will be used, your local climate, and how much upkeep you want to take on. Our outdoor surface options guide compares the main choices.

Can basketball court tiles be used indoors?+

Yes. Plenty of court tiles work indoors as long as the space suits them. People often lay modular tiles in garages or multi-use halls where a permanent sprung floor is not practical. Our indoor vs outdoor flooring guide goes into more detail.

What's the difference between modular tiles and poured court surfaces?+

It comes down to flexibility versus permanence. Modular basketball court tiles interlock, so they can shift slightly with temperature changes and settling ground, and a damaged section lifts out and gets replaced on its own. A poured or coated surface is bonded to the base as one continuous finish. That looks seamless, but repairs are trickier and the result leans heavily on the quality of the base underneath.

Does basketball court flooring absorb impact?+

Some do, but how much they absorb varies a lot. Indoor sprung floors give the most cushioning, while outdoor systems are built more for stability. A few outdoor and modular flooring systems add shock pads or use a flexing tile structure to soften the feel underfoot without going soft.

How long does basketball court flooring last outdoors?+

A well-made outdoor floor can last many years, even in tough conditions. How long really depends on the material, how it was installed, and how much sun and weather it takes. UV stability, room to expand in the heat, good drainage, and a solid base all help. Our guide on outdoor court surface options covers what to look for in a floor that lasts.

Basketball Hoops FAQs

What size basketball hoop is regulation?+

A regulation rim is 18 inches (45.72 cm) across, mounted 10 feet (3.05 m) above the floor. That measurement is the same for NBA and FIBA competition as it is for recreational play. Our hoop dimensions guide has the full specifications.

What's the difference between a basketball hoop, rim, and basket?+

People use these interchangeably, but they mean slightly different things. The rim is the metal ring the ball drops through. The basket is the rim and net together. "Hoop" is the loosest of the three: in everyday use it covers the whole assembly, backboard and post included.

What is a flex rim and how does it work?+

A flex rim bends under load and springs back into place. An internal spring soaks up the force of a dunk, which takes strain off the backboard and post and is easier on players too. It also means less wear on the hoop over time. You can see the flex rim options in our basketball hoop range.

Are breakaway rims suitable for home basketball courts?+

Yes, and they are usually the ones we recommend for a home court. The rim flexes under load, so there is less chance of damage and less risk of injury. That matters when players of different ages and sizes share the court. Our guide on choosing the right hoop for your home court has more.

Do professional hoops adjust in height?+

Yes. Most pro-grade hoops adjust for height, and the better systems move smoothly across a wide range, so the same hoop works for younger and older players. Browse our hoop range to compare the height-adjustable models.

Layouts & Dimensions FAQs

What size basketball court do I need at home?+

It depends on the space you have and how you want to use it. Most home courts are smaller than full regulation size and still play really well for shooting around and casual games. Our court dimensions guide lists the standard sizes, and our 3D court designer lets you drop a layout into your actual space before you commit.

What's the difference between full-court, half-court, and 3×3 layouts?+

A full court is regulation size and takes five-a-side. A half court has one basket and is great for shooting practice and small games. A 3×3 court follows its own FIBA dimensions, built for the faster half-court format. For the exact sizes, see our guides on compact court layouts and 3×3 court dimensions.

Can I build a basketball court in a driveway or small garden?+

Yes, plenty of courts go into driveways and small gardens. They usually use a scaled-down layout that keeps the right proportions without needing full regulation dimensions. Our compact court guide shows what fits in a smaller space, and the 3D court designer shows exactly how a court sits in your area.

Are NBA and FIBA court dimensions the same?+

NBA and FIBA courts are close to the same overall size, but the markings differ. The three-point line, the key, and the no-charge zone are not identical between them. Our court dimensions guide covers both standards in full.

What is the minimum space required for a half court?+

A half court needs enough room to shoot, move, and grab rebounds without feeling cramped. Our compact court dimensions guide gives the smallest sizes that still work at home. Use the 3D court designer to see a scaled layout in your own space.

Installation FAQs

Do I need a concrete base for a basketball court?+

Usually, yes. The floor needs a stable, level base under it, or it will not perform or last. Concrete is the most common choice because it stays put and does not shift over time. Our guide on building a basketball court sub base covers what you need.

Can basketball court flooring be installed on asphalt?+

Yes, as long as the asphalt is sound and properly prepared. It needs to be fully cured, stable, and free of major cracks or humps before you lay tiles over it. Our installation guide covers the base requirements in detail.

How flat does the base need to be?+

Flat enough that the ball bounces true and nobody trips. Small variations are usually fine, but big dips or ridges should be levelled before you install. Our sub base guide gives the flatness tolerances and how to prep.

How long does it take to install a basketball court?+

It depends on the court size, the flooring you choose, and whether the base is already down. With modular tiles, the surface itself goes down quickly once the base is ready. Our planning guide helps you order the work from groundwork through to finish.

Can basketball court tiles be installed DIY?+

Yes, a lot of tile systems are made for DIY. The tiles interlock, so you can put them together without special tools, which makes a home install realistic for most people. Our full basketball court installation guide walks through it step by step.

Designing & Buying FAQs

How much does a basketball court cost?+

It varies with the size, the surface you pick, and the equipment you add. A smaller home or half court costs a lot less than a full-size or commercial build. The quickest way to get a real number is our 3D court designer, which prices your configuration as you build it. Our ultimate home court guide also goes into budgeting.

Can I design my basketball court before buying?+

Yes. Our 3D basketball court designer lets you set the dimensions, try different layouts, and see how the flooring and hoop look together before you buy anything. Our guide on how to design a basketball court in 3D is a good place to start.

Are basketball court quotes instant or manual?+

The 3D court designer gives you a quote on the spot, worked out from the court size, the flooring, and the equipment you choose. Bigger or more unusual projects may need a manual review, but most home courts can be priced straight away.

Can I order basketball court flooring samples?+

Yes. You can order flooring samples to feel the surface and check the rigidity and build quality before you decide. It is a useful first step when you are weighing up options for an outdoor or multi-use court.

Do you deliver basketball courts across Europe?+

Yes, we deliver across Europe. Timings and options depend on where you are and how big the order is, but most standard orders ship straight to site. It is worth booking delivery early for a larger court, or if your dates are tight.
