A pickleball court is 20 ft by 44 ft, the same for singles and doubles. That is small enough to build in a garden that could never take a tennis court, and one set of lines covers both formats.
The geometry that matters is the kitchen, the non-volley zone that runs 7 ft back from the net on each side. You cannot volley while standing in it, so the ball has to bounce there first, and that is what makes the game play the way it does. It is usually laid in a contrasting colour, so players can see the line without looking down.
Nobody plays inside a box, so each court here is defined by the room around it. In a garden you can trim the run-off to about 1 m at the sides and 1.5 m at each end, which puts the whole pad inside roughly 8.1 × 16.4 m. Clubs and new builds take the larger playing areas USA Pickleball sets out.
For several courts, the 2-court, 3-court and 4-court layouts share run-off between neighbours, and four courts take about the footprint of one tennis court. Every court uses the Pickleball Pro tile, and the pickleball court dimensions guide covers the lines, the net and the noise question.
Common questions
What size is a pickleball court?
20 ft by 44 ft, the same for singles and doubles. What changes is the room around it. The minimum playing area USA Pickleball gives is our standard court, and the size it recommends for new builds is our comfort court. The pickleball court dimensions guide has every line.
Will a pickleball court fit in my garden?
Often, yes. Our garden court keeps the regulation playing lines and trims the run-off to about 1 m at the sides and 1.5 m at each end, for relaxed games where space is tight. If you have the room, take a larger run-off: it is what keeps a lob or a wide ball playable.
How many pickleball courts fit on a tennis court?
Up to four. The footprint of a single tennis court holds four pickleball courts side by side with shared run-off, which is why so many clubs convert one. Our 4-court layout is that arrangement on one pad, and there are 2-court and 3-court versions for smaller sites.
Can I add pickleball lines to another court?
Yes. Pickleball is one of the easiest second sports to add, because the court is small and its lines go down in a different colour. It pairs well with a basketball half-court or with a badminton court, which has almost the same footprint. Add the second sport in the 3D designer to see both sets of lines together.
Which surface is best for pickleball?
We lay pickleball on the Pickleball Pro tile, which is tuned for the bounce of a pickleball, with line colours that read cleanly under floodlights. Choose your court and line colours in the 3D designer.
