Volleyball

One court, three free zones: recreational, FIVB and international.

Volleyball courts: plan the free zone first

The size of a volleyball court is almost never the figure that matters. Volleyball is played substantially outside the court, and the space around it is a regulated part of the facility. Get it wrong and a dig off the boundary line puts a player into a fence.

So the three courts above are one court with three different free zones. The recreational court keeps about 2 m all round: not FIVB legal, and fine if nobody is refereeing. The competition court has the regulation free zone, and the international court the clearance used for world competition.

Two things are worth settling before you buy posts. Net height steps down by age group, so a court that juniors will use needs posts that adjust. And indoors the ceiling is a limit many halls cannot meet, where outdoors it is no constraint at all, which is a real argument for an outdoor court.

Every court is laid on the Dynamic Pro II tile, a consistent surface to land on. The volleyball court dimensions guide gives the lines and the net heights.

Vanliga frågor

What size is a volleyball court?

Always 18 × 9 m, with the net at 2.43 m for men and 2.24 m for women. What varies is the free zone around the court. The volleyball court dimensions guide covers every line.

How big does the free zone need to be?

The FIVB asks for a free zone on every side, and a larger one for world competition. Our competition court is laid with the FIVB free zone and the international court with the world-competition clearance. For a garden or a school, the recreational court keeps about 2 m all round.

What ceiling height does volleyball need?

The FIVB sets a minimum of 7 m of clear height above the court, and 12.5 m for world competition. Check the height before the floor, because it is the one dimension you cannot change. A hall that clears 7 m also takes basketball, whose indoor courts each state the ceiling they need.

Can I build a volleyball court outdoors?

Yes. The Dynamic Pro II tile is free-draining and slip-resistant, so the court can go outdoors on a firm, flat base as well as in a hall. It gives a consistent surface to land on, which matters in a jumping sport.
