A full handball court is the largest court we build, bigger than a basketball court by a considerable margin. That puts it in the territory of schools, clubs and sports centres, and beyond most other sites.
The useful thing to know is that a smaller court works. The IHF defines one court for every age group, so our youth and school court is a reduced court and not an official format. It takes roughly two thirds of the area, which is often the difference between a project that fits and one that does not, and every marking is scaled with it so the game stays recognisable.
The goal area is the marking that defines the sport. It is drawn as two quarter-circles from the goalposts joined by a straight section, and no outfield player may stand inside it. The free-throw line beyond it is dashed, which tells the two apart at a glance, and getting that wrong is one of the more common errors on a multi-sport floor.
Handball is fast and physical, and players reach the sidelines at speed, often in the air, so both courts are laid with a safety margin. They use the Dynamic Pro II tile, and the handball court dimensions guide covers every line.
Vanliga frågor
What size is a handball court?
40 × 20 m, the one size the IHF defines for every age group. Our IHF court is laid in whole tiles, and the handball court dimensions guide covers the goal, the goal area, the free-throw line and every other marking.
My hall cannot take the full court. What are the options?
Our youth and school court keeps every marking, scaled with the court: the goal area, the free-throw line, the 7 m line and the goalkeeper line. It is not a competition size, but it lets a school hall teach the whole game.
How much space is needed around the court?
On the full court, allow a safety zone of at least 1 m along the sides and 2 m behind the goals. Our IHF court is laid with it. Draw your hall in the 3D designer to check the court and its safety zone fit inside the walls.
Can handball share a hall with other sports?
Yes, and most halls do. A 40 × 20 m handball court is the same size as an international futsal court, so one floor can carry both in different line colours. The futsal range has that court.
