Basketball court cost in Italy
From about €2,500 for a key court on existing paving to €24,000 built from new. IVA at 22% is the highest in the comparison, and Italy is the one market where permission is a real cost line and not just a delay.
A modular basketball court in Italy runs from about €2,500 for a key court on existing paving to €24,000 for a garden half court built from new. Tiles and hoops are catalogue prices that do not change between Milan and Palermo. What varies is the scavo and the base in calcestruzzo — and, more than in most of Europe, whether the works need a building formality at all.
Figures exclude IVA unless stated.
What the surface and equipment cost
Tiles are priced per square metre at €35–55, Super X at the lower end and Dynamic Pro II at the upper.
| Court | Area | Tiles only |
|---|---|---|
| Compact key court, 6.11 × 6.72 m | ~41 m² | €1,450–2,300 |
| Extended key court, 5.3 × 9.4 m | ~50 m² | €1,750–2,750 |
| FIBA 3x3 court, 15 × 11 m | ~165 m² | €5,800–9,100 |
| NBA-spec half court, 15.2 × 14.3 m | ~217 m² | €7,600–11,900 |
| Full FIBA court, 28 × 15 m | ~420 m² | €14,700–23,100 |
A MegaSlam 60 in-ground hoop is €2,900–3,800, a 72" board €4,100–5,300, a hoop-mounted light €950–1,400, a ball-stop net €470–820, and fencing €1,700–4,600.
Groundworks
Reckon on €45–90 per m² for excavation, sub-base and a reinforced slab, supplied and installed. Lombardy, Veneto and the Rome area sit at the top of that band; much of the south sits at the bottom. For a 165 m² 3x3 court that is roughly €7,400–14,900.
Italian quotes usually separate scavo e sottofondo from the base in calcestruzzo armato, which is helpful — it lets you see whether a high number is the digging or the concrete, and the digging is the part that varies with access and ground.
If you already have sound, level concrete or asphalt, the tiles lay straight onto it dry and this whole section disappears. In Italy that saving is larger than elsewhere, because it usually also moves the works into edilizia libera and removes the permit cost below.
IVA
Standard IVA is 22% — the highest rate of any market in this comparison. On a €20,000 build that is about €4,400. Consumer prices normally include it and quotes to businesses normally exclude it, so establish which you are reading before comparing two numbers.
The permit cost is a real line here
In most countries permission is a delay rather than an expense. In Italy it is both, because CILA, SCIA and a permesso di costruire all require a qualified professional to file them.
| Route | Cost | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| *Edilizia libera* | Nothing | Removable tiles on existing paving |
| CILA | ~€500–1,500 plus municipal charges | Tiles on bare ground, in many *comuni*; fencing |
| SCIA | ~€1,000–3,000 | New fixed paving; larger fixed structures |
| *Permesso di costruire* | ~€2,000–8,000+ | Rare privately — permanent covers, major reshaping |
That table is the strongest financial argument for laying tiles on paving you already have, and for choosing a removable surface over a poured one where the choice exists. The full picture, including the vincoli that override all of it, is in the Italian permissions guide.
Three worked projects
Key court on existing paving — €2,500–4,200. Extended key court, sound existing surface, Super X tiles laid without a contractor, wall-mounted hoop. Usually edilizia libera, so no professional fee either.
Garden half court — €14,000–24,000. 3x3 court at 15 × 11 m, new slab, Dynamic Pro II tiles, in-ground MegaSlam 60. Roughly half is the base, and a CILA or SCIA fee sits on top.
Club court — €22,000–38,000. NBA-spec half court, professional installation throughout, 72" hoop, lighting and ball-stop netting, shared-use markings.
What tends to be left out
- The professional fee for CILA or SCIA, which is a genuine cost in Italy and not a formality.
- Drainage work where the ground does not take water, and additional authorisation where a vincolo idrogeologico applies.
- Delivery, which rises for the islands and the deep south.
- Reinstatement of lawn and planting.
- A duct for lighting, which has to go in before the base — see the lighting guide.
Getting an accurate figure
Settle the permit route with the SUE first, because in Italy it changes the budget and not just the timetable. Then fix the size, surface and equipment in the 3D designer and take that specification to two or three local contractors for the base.
Costs across the rest of Europe, and what drives the differences: what a basketball court costs in Europe.
