Basketball court cost in France
From about €2,500 for a key court on an existing slab to €24,000 for a garden half court built from new. What the terrassement really costs, how to read a devis, and the TVA question worth putting in writing.
A modular basketball court in France runs from about €2,500 for a key court on an existing slab to €24,000 or so for a garden half court built from scratch. The surfacing and the hoop are catalogue prices that do not change between Lyon and Lille. The terrassement underneath does, and it is usually the biggest line on the quote.
Figures below exclude TVA unless stated, because that is how a contractor's devis will present them to you.
What the surface and equipment cost
Tiles are priced per square metre at €35–55, Super X at the lower end and Dynamic Pro II at the upper.
| Court | Area | Tiles only |
|---|---|---|
| Compact key court, 6.11 × 6.72 m | ~41 m² | €1,450–2,300 |
| Extended key court, 5.3 × 9.4 m | ~50 m² | €1,750–2,750 |
| FIBA 3x3 court, 15 × 11 m | ~165 m² | €5,800–9,100 |
| NBA-spec half court, 15.2 × 14.3 m | ~217 m² | €7,600–11,900 |
| Full FIBA court, 28 × 15 m | ~420 m² | €14,700–23,100 |
Equipment: a MegaSlam 60 in-ground hoop is €2,900–3,800, a 72" MegaSlam €4,100–5,300, a hoop-mounted light €950–1,400 and a ball-stop net €470–820. Fencing is the widest range on any court build at €1,700–4,600, because it depends entirely on height and run.
Groundworks — the line that actually varies
Reckon on €45–85 per m² for a poured slab supplied and installed, with Île-de-France and the Côte d'Azur at the top of that and much of the rural west and centre at the bottom.
For a 3x3 court at 165 m² that is roughly €7,400–14,000 — comparable to everything else on the build put together.
You can avoid it entirely if you already have sound, level concrete. Tiles lay straight onto it without adhesive, which is why a key court on an existing terrace is the cheapest real court you can build.
Two things push a French quote upward:
- Slope. A sloping garden needs cut and fill or a retaining edge, and that is masonry rather than groundworks pricing.
- Access. A garden reachable only through the house changes the plant a terrassier can bring, and hand-barrowing concrete is charged accordingly.
Ask for a devis rather than an estimation. A signed devis is contractually binding on the price, and it is the document that makes three quotes comparable.
TVA
Standard TVA is 20%, and consumer prices normally include it. A €20,000 build carries about €4,000 of tax, so always establish whether a figure is HT (excluding) or TTC (including) before comparing two quotes — the same company will quote both ways depending on who is asking.
France does have a reduced 10% rate for improvement work on dwellings more than two years old, but outdoor garden and sports surfaces generally fall outside it. It is worth putting the question to your installer in writing rather than assuming either way; the difference on a €12,000 groundworks bill is around €1,200.
Permission
Most garden courts need no permit for the surface itself, because a flat court at ground level is treated as a terrasse de plain-pied. Fencing is the common exception — many communes require a déclaration préalable for any clôture. The full picture, including the PLU and protected sectors, is in the French planning permission guide.
Budget for time rather than money: a déclaration préalable takes a month to instruct, two where the Architecte des Bâtiments de France is involved.
Three worked projects
Key court on an existing terrace — €2,500–4,200. Extended key court, sound existing slab, Super X tiles laid without a contractor, wall-mounted hoop. No groundworks.
Garden half court — €14,000–24,000. 3x3 court at 15 × 11 m, new slab by a local terrassier, Dynamic Pro II tiles, in-ground MegaSlam 60. Roughly half the total is the base.
Club court — €22,000–38,000. NBA-spec half court, professional installation, 72" hoop, lighting and ball-stop netting, custom line markings for shared use. Clubs affiliated to a fédération should ask about equipment funding through the Agence nationale du Sport before committing — it does not apply to private homes.
What tends to be left out
- Drainage work where the ground does not take water. Assessed on site.
- Delivery, which rises for Corsica and the DOM.
- Reinstatement of lawn and planting the works disturbed.
- Evening lighting, which needs a duct laid before the base goes down — see the lighting guide.
Getting an accurate figure
Fix the size, surface and equipment in the 3D designer, then take that specification to two or three local terrassiers for the slab. The product half of the price stops moving, and the half that varies is the half you can tender.
Costs across the rest of Europe, and what drives the differences: what a basketball court costs in Europe.
