Netball courts: what basketball players get wrong

People who know basketball assume they know netball, and the two differ in ways that change how the court is built. There is no backboard: the ring is mounted on a bare post, so a shot has no forgiving surface behind it.

The post stands on the goal line, not behind it, and play happens around it. That is why the clearance behind the goal line is a real requirement, and why our international court is laid with the run-off World Netball asks for.

The thirds govern everything. Players are restricted to areas by position and the ball must be touched in each third as it moves up the court, so the lines are not decorative. Every court above keeps the three thirds and both goal circles, and the goal circle is set out by its radius, the detail several widely copied sources get wrong.

The full court is out of reach for most sites, so the range steps down to school and intro sizes with the markings scaled to fit. Every court is laid on the Dynamic Pro II tile, and the netball court dimensions guide has every figure.

Časté otázky

What size is a netball court?

The international (INF) court is 30.5 × 15.25 m, divided into three equal thirds, with a goal circle of 4.9 m radius at each end. Our international court adds the regulation 3.05 m run-off all round. The netball court dimensions guide has every line.

Do you make smaller courts for schools?

Yes. The intro court is for primary schools and beginners, the school court fits a school sports hall, and the club court is close to the full size. Each keeps the three thirds and the goal circles, scaled to the court.

Can a netball court be used for other sports?

Yes. Netball is one of the usual second sports on a basketball court, marked in its own line colour, and a school court often carries both. Add the second sport in the 3D designer to see the lines together.

Is a tiled court suitable for netball outdoors?

Yes. Netball asks for quick stops, pivots and landings on every possession, so grip matters most. The Dynamic Pro II tile is slip-resistant and drains straight through, so an outdoor court is playable soon after rain.
