Badminton

A court with the run-off you choose, or a hall of up to four.

Badminton courts: indoors by choice, outdoors with care

A badminton court is exactly the size of a pickleball court, so one pad can carry both games. The singles and the doubles lines are both marked on it, and unusually it is the singles court that is narrower.

This is the one sport in the range where we will talk you out of something. A shuttlecock weighs about five grams, and wind beats it every time: a light breeze curves a clear, and anything more turns a skilful game into a lottery. A garden court is for family games on calm days. Serious badminton belongs indoors, or in a well-sheltered spot.

Indoors the constraint moves from the floor to the ceiling. BWF competition asks for up to 9 m of clear height, so check that before you measure anything else. For a hall, the 2-court, 3-court and 4-court layouts put the courts side by side with a walkway between them.

Every court is laid on the Dynamic Pro II tile. The run-off each court gives is on its card above, and the badminton court dimensions guide explains what each one is for.

What size is a badminton court?

A doubles court is 13.40 × 6.10 m, and the singles lines sit inside the same layout. The court itself is small. The space around it is what makes it playable, so each court in this range is defined by its run-off. Our badminton court dimensions guide covers the lines and the net.

How much space do I need around the court?

The BWF recommends about 2 m behind each baseline plus clearance at the sides, which is our comfort court. For a garden, the garden court trims that to about 1 m at the sides and 1.5 m at the ends. For competition, the tournament court allows about 2.4 m at the sides and 3 m at the ends.

What ceiling height does badminton need?

BWF competition asks for up to 9 m of clear height. Recreational play manages with less, but a low ceiling takes away the high clear. Measure the height before the floor, because it is the one dimension you cannot change, then draw the hall in the 3D designer to check the courts fit.

Can I fit several courts in one hall?

Yes. Courts are lined up side by side with a walkway between them. Our 2-court, 3-court and 4-court layouts put a whole hall on one pad, from 16.46 × 17.68 m for two courts to 32.31 × 17.68 m for four.

Can badminton be played outdoors on these tiles?

Yes. The Dynamic Pro II tile under every court here is free-draining and slip-resistant, so it works outdoors as well as in a hall. Outdoors the limit is the wind, not the surface, which is why the garden courts are for casual play.
